On February 5, 2025, the Sulu Garden Foundation (SGF) joined a soil sampling activity conducted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR CENRO) – Guimbal in Municipality of Alimodian, Iloilo. This collaboration marked a significant step in SGF’s efforts to align their reforestation initiatives with scientific data and community insights, paving the way for targeted environmental projects.
During the activity, SGF surveyed tree species that could potentially be used in their “Re-Greening of Panay” project and evaluated open areas suitable for drone-assisted monitoring. Some species identified included Ficus minahassae (a bird-magnet species), Clerodendrum intermedium, Aglaonema philippinense, the Philippine endemic Alocasia boyceana, Ficus odorata, and Areca catechu. SGF also highlighted several species under consideration for reforestation, such as Lisak (Neonauclea bartlingii), various Ficus species, Malapapaya (Polyscias nodosa), and Mountain Agoho (Gymnostoma rumphianum).
From left to right: Lisak (Neonauclea bartlingii), Pakiling (Ficus odorata), Bunga (Areca catechu), Alocasia boyceana, Strobilanthes reptans, Aglaonema philippinense, Mountain Agoho (Gymnostoma rumphianum), Ardisia sp., and Wikstroemia sp.
In addition to the scientific survey, SGF conducted community interviews with local residents to:
- Assess their livelihoods and understand socioeconomic concerns.
- Gather opinions on the current regreening programs initiated by the government.
- Explore their views on agriculture and forestry techniques.
- Gauge their interest in potential reforestation and conservation projects in their area.
SGF’s participation in the soil sampling activity also aligns with their innovative approach to reforestation, which includes the use of seedball technology. This method involves creating small spheres packed with native tree seeds, protected by a clay shell that dissolves during the rainy season, ensuring optimal germination conditions. The seedballs can be dispersed manually or via drones, allowing SGF to reach previously inaccessible areas efficiently.
The “Re-Greening of Panay” program is envisioned as a five-year initiative that incorporates cutting-edge technologies such as drone-assisted monitoring and satellite imagery to track progress and ensure the success of reforestation efforts. SGF has already begun the research and development phase, including field trials and the production of seedballs using locally sourced clay and seeds. Read more
This collaboration with DENR CENRO and local stakeholders underscores SGF’s commitment to restoring Panay’s ecological balance while addressing the challenges posed by climate change and deforestation. By combining scientific methods, innovative technologies, and community engagement, SGF continues to champion sustainable and inclusive conservation efforts in Alimodian and beyond.
Stay tuned for updates on SGF’s initiatives as they work hand-in-hand with DENR CENRO and local communities to create a greener future for Panay Island!
